Colorwork might look intimidating at first, but trust us: you’ve got this! We’ve gathered a few tips to make your knitting smoother, easier and more enjoyable.

📖 HOW TO READ THE CHART

The chart is read from the bottom up, from right to left. Each square corresponds to one stitch. Each round always begins at the bottom right square. When you’ve completed the round, move on to the next row in the chart.

Each size has its own chart shown in random colors. These are only a visual guide. You choose which two yarn colors you want to use, but follow the structure of the pattern as shown in the chart.

🌈 WHICH COLOR TAKES THE LEAD

When knitting with two colors, the strand you hold closest to your work will appear more prominent in the pattern (this is called the dominant color). Decide early which color you want to stand out, and hold the yarns the same way throughout your project. It’ll give you a neat, professional-looking result.

💡 DON’T PULL TOO TIGHT

It’s easy to knit too tightly when working colorwork, but try to relax your hands. If your floats are too short, the fabric will start to pucker. When you work more than four stitches in the same color, twist the yarns gently on the back to avoid long floats and tangles.

📏 CHECK YOUR GAUGE

Since colorwork often ends up a bit tighter than plain stockinette, we strongly recommend checking your gauge in pattern. A tiny colorwork swatch can save you from both frustration and frogging later.

🔍 FIND YOUR TECHNIQUE

There are many ways to hold your yarns, and none of them are wrong. Some knitters hold both strands in their left hand, others one in each, while some prefer to “throw” with one hand. Try different ways and stick with what feels natural for you.

Today you will block your mittens. This helps even out the stitches and makes them softer to wear.

Fill a clean bucket or the sink with lukewarm water and a bit of wool detergent if you have it. Soak the mittens and gently press them to let the water fully absorb into the fibers. Let them sit for about 10 minutes, then gently squeeze out the water. You can spin them in the washing machine (make sure to use spin only — not a wash cycle).

Lay the mittens flat to dry, ideally on a bathroom floor with underfloor heating.

We’re so happy that you’re joining the knit-along!

Every day in December at 06:00 (CET), a new window in the calendar will open. We know the time leading up to Christmas can be busy, so this knit-along is designed so that you only need to knit a little each day. Hopefully, it gives you a small nudge to sit down and relax — and it’s also easy to catch up if you miss a day or two.

About the pattern

The mittens are worked from the bottom up, first in 2x2 rib for the cuff, and the mitten itself in stockinette stitch with a pattern. They are worked with a single fold on the cuff and will have two layers of fabric around the wrists.

We recommend that you knit a swatch in the pattern to check whether you meet the gauge of 18 stitches / 10 cm on 4.5 mm needles. If you have more stitches than the given gauge per 10 cm, you need to use larger needles. If you have fewer stitches, you need to use smaller needles.

Many knitters tend to knit more tightly when working with colorwork, especially on small projects like mittens, so it may be wise to go up a needle size to achieve the correct gauge.

The suggested needle sizes are 4.0 and 4.5 mm (or the size needed to meet the gauge), either 80 cm circular needles with magic loop or double-pointed needles.
